Telecom operators lost almost $14bn in revenues in 2011 from a decline in text messaging owing to the rise in use of social messaging services provided free over the internet on smartphones, research has shown. Ovum, the independent technology analyst, said that the $13.9bn loss represented nearly 9 per cent of total messaging revenues in 2011, and came on the back of an $8.7bn loss of SMS revenues in 2010.

After nine years and £11.4 billion ($18.7 billion), the British government is about to scrap its attempt to build a massive, nationwide health IT network for the 52 million residents of England, a London news report says.
Instead, the National Health Service (NHS) will follow the recommendations of a parliamentary report and give local authorities more leeway in selecting and implementing health IT systems, according to a story that appeared Wednesday in The Independent. Government ministers are expected to make the announcement next month, the newspaper said.
